Sunday 3rd September once again saw Kirkbride Airfield open it's doors to the general public. Yet again mother nature done it's best to ruin our plans for our annual bash. The day before had been pretty much perfect, however an Atlantic weather system was rapidly trying to push in from the west. Earlier in the year we were delighted to hear from the RAF Events team that we had been allocated a Spitfire and Hurricane flypast from the BBMF at RAF Coningsby, however there were major problems with the Merlin engined aircraft in their fleet and we extremely luck to get confirmation that the Griffon engined MkXIX Spitfire would still be providing a few flypasts on the day. Sqn Ldr Mark Discombe managed to give us three stunning passes on the day around 12:15pm, we were at one point asked if we could accept them at 10:30am but careful watching of the weather radar and crosswinds finally meant a more acceptable time for a Sunday was acheived. Our resident Gyro instructor Chris Jones was kept busy during the day offering the chance of a taster flight in the MT-03 for a very reasonable £20. We were also delighted to welcome back Simon Johnston who took the resident Skybolt out for a spin, sadly no aerobatics in the vicinity of the airfield as post Shoreham rules and regulations have somewhat changed, however it's always nice to see a biplane in the air. he also brought over a rather nice vintage PA-15 Vagabond from Fishburn, a great effort in challenging conditions. We did have quite a few intesting types that if the weather gods had behaved were hoping to get in. Everything from Extra 300's, Vans RV's, Pitts Specials, Harvard and even a Yak-3! Sadly the not so great British weather conspired against us. However we would like to thank the brave who did venture up and over on the day and i'm sure one year we're bound to get a sunny day, aren't we???
